Chapel Hill came to be from a profound realization that has led me here to Montreal. What started as an unconscious exploration of my town became a turning point in my life. Suburbia is a unique environment in which to grow up. On the surface, it seems perfect. Immaculate lawns, gardens, well-spaced trees, and parks create a sense of harmony and congruity. Roaming the suburbs alone at night has always felt surreal to me. You are completely isolated from others while simultaneously being so close. Only a few meters from the street, the glow of a window offers a story. The dwellings are unvaried in appearance, yet unparalleled in narratives. When I was younger, my father often brought me along with him on long days out canvassing in the car. Watching the world from behind a window was how I passed the time. These circumstances likewise led me to meet numerous people, each with a unique perspective and life experience to share. A year ago, I started going out with my camera to visit the many neighborhoods of my hometown to capture the magic and intrigue I saw in these places. I photographed by instinct, shooting what called to me. Later, I discovered that making these pictures was similar to looking out from behind the car window. The only difference was that now I was the one looking in.
